The Most Ignored Hydration Habit
There was no “fitness journey.”
No motivational podcast.
No biohacking guru.
No Kareena Kapoor whispering, “Drink water, glow from within.”
My journey into better habits started with a Tupperware bottle… and the hostel mess menu, which could only be described as consistently surprising. Let’s just say — I didn’t start drinking water because I was mindful.
I drank it to survive.
The Accidental Origin Story
Let’s rewind to when I was 18, fresh out of home, stepping into engineering college life.I arrived armed with ambition, innocence, and a rather questionable haircut for an 18-year-old guy. But nothing prepared me for the hostel mess.
Breakfast? Often some variety of rice — lemon rice, tomato rice, tamarind rice, pongal… all before 9:00 a.m. As someone raised on aloo paratha, banana smoothies, or even poha sometimes, my stomach kept checking its watch like, “Wait, are we having lunch already?” Lunch? A revolving cast of vegetables — often in deeply mysterious gravies.
You never quite knew what you were eating until three bites in — and even then, you weren’t sure. No chicken curry. No egg bhurji. Ours was a vegetarian hostel through and through. Which is great… if you’re used to that. I wasn’t. So there I was — 18 years old, trying to focus in 9:00 a.m. computer aided engineering drawing class, mildly homesick, and very hungry.
That’s when I started drinking more water. Not for health. Not for mindfulness.
Just to feel somewhat full — and stay awake.
Not All Heroes Wear Capes (Some Just Carry Bottles)
If someone had told me back then that “drinking water” would one day be my number one wellness tip, I’d have laughed — while chewing on my Parle-G and GoodDay biscuits.
Water isn’t glamorous. It doesn’t trend. It doesn’t get hashtags like #GreenSmoothieGoals. But here’s the thing: It works. It’s the one habit so obvious, we keep ignoring it.
Your Body Is Basically a Water Tank With Emotions
We’ve all heard the stat: human bodies are around 60% water. Biologically speaking, we’re just sentient nimbu paani.
Water is everything:
- Brain fuel
- Temperature control
- Digestion assistant
- Mood booster
- Skin support
Dehydration? It sneaks up on you like exam deadlines — quietly, suddenly, dramatically.
You feel:
- Foggy
- Tired
- Cranky
- Hungry (but it’s actually thirst)
- Low energy — like your body’s on “low battery” mode
And in those moments, we usually grab… more chai. Or coffee. Or sugar. When what we actually need is just water.
Why Starting With Water Works
That little Tupperware bottle was more than plastic. It was a gateway habit.
1. It’s the Easiest Win of the Day
- No willpower required
- No morning workout
- No 5 a.m. journaling
- Just drink
One simple act that says: “I showed up for myself today.” Tiny, but powerful — it sets the tone for better choices.
2. Your Body Actually Needs It (First Thing)
After 7–8 hours of sleep, your body is like a dry sponge.
Drinking water in the morning:
- Rehydrates your brain
- Flushes out toxins
- Helps digestion
- Fires up metabolism
- Makes you feel human again (especially when breakfast feels like déjà vu rice)
3. It Becomes a Mini Ritual
That glass of water isn’t just physical fuel — it’s a moment of mental clarity. A pause to say: “Before the emails, the meetings, the chaos — I choose me.” That’s not just hydration. That’s intention.
“But Water Is So Boring!”
Valid. Especially when you’re used to tastebud explosions from chai, coffee, jaljeera, or Pepsi. But here’s where India shines — we’ve been flavoring water since before it was cool.
Try:
- Lemon water – Desi classic
- Jeera water – Your dadi probably swears by it
- Tulsi + mint – Spa-like but spiritual
- Cucumber slices – For when you’re feeling like a wellness influencer
Or just chill your water in an earthen pot or copper vessel.
Bonus: it feels fancy and traditional.
How to Make It a Habit (Without Turning Into a Hydration Preacher)
You don’t need to carry a gallon jug or post bottle selfies.
Just do this:
1. Keep it where you can see it. Visual cues work.
Keep your bottle:
- Next to your bed
- On your desk
- In the kitchen
- In your bag
- In the car (just don’t forget it and rediscover it two weeks later)
2. Pair it with an existing habit (Habit stacking)
- Wake up → Drink water
- Brush teeth → Drink water
- Before chai → Water first
- Before Instagram doomscrolling → Sip
- Before that Zoom call → Sip twice
3. Start Small, Build Slowly
Don’t aim for 3 litres on Day 1.
Begin with:
- 1 glass after waking
- 1 before each meal
- 1 mid-afternoon
Even that small shift will change your energy levels. And your skin will thank you.
Not a Miracle. Just a Start.
Let’s keep it real.
Water won’t:
- Give you abs
- Turn you into Ranveer Singh
- Help you understand cryptocurrency
- Make okra curry taste better
But it will:
- Help you feel clearer
- Boost your energy
- Reduce random snack cravings
- Lift your mood
- Make you feel more in control
And that’s honestly a great deal for something that literally falls from the sky.
The Obvious Truth
We don’t always need dramatic life overhauls. Sometimes, the first step toward better health, better habits, and better days… is just drinking a glass of water.
It won’t fix everything. But it reminds you: “I’m still here. I still care. I’m choosing to begin — with something small, something good.”
And most days, that’s more than enough.
From The Curious Optimist
Every big change starts small. Every better day begins with one better choice. And sometimes, that choice is as simple as a sip of water.
I’m not here to sell you a lifestyle or a miracle. I’m just here to remind you — gently, curiously — that there’s magic in the obvious.
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. You just need to begin.
And maybe, just maybe, that beginning is already in your glass.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, we’ll explore not just habits… but also fatherhood, digital mindfulness, and the quiet truths we often ignore.
Until next Monday,
Stay hydrated. Stay hopeful. The Curious Optimist
Live curious. Think optimistic.

Love your chain of thought and creative idea!
But, you’ll need my permission before it’s on a T-shirt. 🍋
Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for the next post, and share this with anyone who needs a hydration reminder.

Truly a necessary reminder for all of us living in a world where unnecessary supplements with complex explanations and new aged “deficiencies” are sensationalised more than a basic proven healthy lifestyle.
And besides the info of this content, it is also very masterfully articulated!
